Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards Preview

This weekend will be filled with awards, starting with the Critics' Choice Awards on Friday night, and ending with the Golden Globes on Sunday night. This year, only a couple of categories are considered "locks," making my following predictions a little bit harder to determine.

Best Picture
Globes Drama Noms: Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, Up in the Air
Globes Comedy or Musical Noms: 500 Days of Summer, The Hangover, It's Complicated, Julie & Julia, Nine
Critics Noms: Avatar, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Invictus, Nine, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up in the Air
Who Should Win: For Globes Drama and the Critics, my personal favorite is Inglourious Basterds; for Globes Comedy or Musical, it's 500 Days of Summer.
Who Will Win: The Globes Drama and Critics races are a tough call, but I'll go with Up in the Air (with Avatar and The Hurt Locker as close competitors). I'd say The Hangover for Globes Comedy or Musical.

Best Director
Globes Noms: Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), James Cameron (Avatar), Clint Eastwood (Invictus), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds)
Critics Noms: Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), James Cameron (Avatar), Lee Daniels (Precious), Clint Eastwood (Invictus), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds)
Who Should Win: I'm a huge Tarantino fan, and he did an amazing job on the film, so I'm going with him for both awards.
Who Will Win: It seems like Bigelow is the favorite this year.

Best Screenplay
Globes Noms: Neill Blomkamp & Terri Tatchell (District 9), Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker), Nancy Meyers (It's Complicated), Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds)
Critics Original Noms: Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker), Joel & Ethan Coen (A Serious Man), Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber (500 Days of Summer), Bob Peterson & Pete Docter (Up), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds)
Critics Adapted Noms: Wes Anderson & Noah Baumbach (Fantastic Mr. Fox), Neill Blomkamp & Terri Tatchell (District 9), Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious), Tom Ford & David Scearce (A Single Man), Nick Hornby (An Education), Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air)
Who Should Win: I'll pick the 500 Days of Summer guys for the Original Critics Award, Tarantino for the Globes, and Anderson and Baumbach for the Adapted Critics Award.
Who Will Win: Tarantino will win the Golden Globe, but he will probably lose to the Coen brothers for the Original Critics Award. Reitman and Turner will win the Adapted Critics Award.

Best Actor
Globes Drama Noms: Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up in the Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man), Morgan Freeman (Invictus), Tobey Maguire (Brothers)
Globes Comedy or Musical Noms: Matt Damon (The Informant!), Daniel Day-Lewis (Nine), Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man)
Critics Noms: Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up in the Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man), Morgan Freeman (Invictus), Viggo Mortensen (The Road), Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker)
Who Should Win: Clooney and Gordon-Levitt are two of my favorite actors, and they both give outstanding performances in the roles for which they're nominated, so I will pick Clooney for the Drama Globe and Critics Award, and Gordon-Levitt for the Comedy or Musical Globe. (I haven't seen Crazy Heart or A Single Man yet, but I have a feeling I'd still go with Clooney.)
Who Will Win: The Globes Drama and Critics are going to be close races between Bridges, Clooney and Firth. At the end of the day, I'll go with Bridges. For the Comedy or Musical Globe, I suppose I'll go with Stuhlbarg winning (although I think Gordon-Levitt and Downey Jr. both have a strong chance).

Best Actress
Globes Drama Noms: Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious)
Globes Comedy or Musical Noms: Sandra Bullock (The Proposal), Marion Cotillard (Nine), Julia Roberts (Duplicity), Meryl Streep (It's Complicated), Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)
Critics Noms: Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)
Who Should Win: Mulligan is my choice for the Drama Globe and the Critics Award; Cotillard is definitely deserving of the Comedy or Musical Globe.
Who Will Win: Mulligan will likely win for both the Drama Globe and the Critics Award; Streep is likely to win the Comedy or Musical Globe for Julie & Julia. (She is also Mulligan's strongest competition for the Critics Award.)

Best Supporting Actor
Globes Noms: Matt Damon (Invictus), Woody Harrelson (The Messenger), Christopher Plummer (The Last Station), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds)
Critics Noms: Matt Damon (Invictus), Woody Harrelson (The Messenger), Christian McKay (Me and Orson Welles), Alfred Molina (An Education), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds)
Who Should Win: Waltz's performance sealed the deal for me upon first viewing...
Who Will Win: ...as it likely did with the voters for both of these awards.

Best Supporting Actress
Globes Noms: Penélope Cruz (Nine), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Mo'Nique (Precious), Julianne Moore (A Single Man)
Critics Noms: Marion Cotillard (Nine), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Mo'Nique (Precious), Julianne Moore (A Single Man), Samantha Morton (The Messenger)
Who Should Win: Cotillard is my pick for the Critics Award (I agree with the critics over the Globes voters that her performance belongs in the supporting category), and I'll go with Kendrick for the Globe.
Who Will Win: Mo'Nique will likely be the winner of both awards.

Barring any significant shake-ups in the Oscar nominations and keeping in mind that I haven't yet seen Crazy Heart or A Single Man, my choices and predictions are likely to stay the same. The Critics' Choice Awards will air live on VH1 on Friday (January 15) at 9 p.m. (ET) with host Kristin Chenoweth. The Golden Globes will air live on NBC on Sunday (January 17) at 8 p.m. (ET) with host Ricky Gervais.

I'll leave you with a pretty amusing promo for the Critic's Choice Awards:
